João Cabral de Melo Neto é declarado Patrono da Poesia no Estado de Pernambuco

O escritor João Cabral de Melo Neto foi declarado (in memoriam) pela Assembleia Legislativa de Pernambuco (Alepe) como Patrono da Poesia no Estado de Pernambuco. A lei nº 17.088, originada por um projeto do deputado estadual e 1º secretário da Alepe, Clodoaldo Magalhães, promulgada no dia 23 de outubro, data de publicação no Diário Oficial de Pernambuco.

João Cabral de Melo Neto nasceu no Recife, Pernambuco, no dia 9 de janeiro de 1920. Filho de Luís Antônio Cabral de Melo e de Carmem Carneiro Leão Cabral de Melo, João Cabral era irmão do historiador Evaldo Cabral de Melo e primo do poeta Manuel Bandeira e do sociólogo Gilberto Freyre.

Em 1941, João Cabral participou do Primeiro Congresso de Poesia do Recife, lendo o opúsculo Considerações sobre o Poeta Dormindo.Passou sua infância entre os engenhos da família, nas cidades de São Lourenço da Mata e Moreno. Amante da leitura, lia tudo o que tinha acesso, no colégio e na casa da avó. Em 1942, o escritor publicou sua primeira coletânea de poemas com o livro Pedra do Sono.

Depois de se tornar amigo do poeta Joaquim Cardoso e do pintor Vicente do Rego Monteiro, mudou-se para o Rio de Janeiro. Nesse mesmo ano, prestou concurso para o funcionalismo público.Durante os anos de 1943 e 1944, trabalhou no Departamento de Arregimentação e Seleção de Pessoal do Rio de Janeiro. Em 1945, publicou seu segundo livro – O Engenheiro -, custeado pelo empresário e poeta Augusto Frederico Schmidt.

As obras literárias de João Cabral de Melo Neto são marcadas pelo uso da metalinguagem (muitos dos seus trabalhos falam sobre a própria criação literária). Seus poemas também contêm imagens surrealistas e influência da cultura popular. Entre diversos escritos, João ficou consagrado pela obra Morte e Vida Severina, publicado em 1955. A obra retrata a trajetória de Severino, que deixa o sertão nordestino em direção ao litoral em busca de melhores condições de vida. Severino encontra no caminho outros nordestinos que, como ele, passam pelas privações impostas ao sertão.
